Normal people have hobbies like shopping and crafts. I have a hobby called loving my pressure cooker. Seriously, I just can’t get enough of it. It made my house smell incredibly amazing with this easy apple butter!
Usually it takes a whole day or night to prepare delicious apple butter in the slow cooker, but with the pressure cooker I was able to cut time to just 1 hour!
The best thing ever invented!
Apple butter just like any nut butters has lots of uses. Spread it on your breakfast toast. Spoon it over ice cream. With waffles or pancakes. With pork. Or simply present a cute jar filled with yummy apple butter to friends and family.
Just about any of your favorite apples will work with this recipe. Wash them, cut them and into the pressure cooker it goes! With a handful of apple’s favorite aromatics like cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves your house will smell heavenly!
Ingredients:
5 lbs apples or about 15, cored and sliced
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp cinnamon
pinch of salt
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup water
Combine all the ingredients in the pressure cooker and mix well. Secure the lid and set timer for 1 hour on high.
After 1 hour let the steam to escape and carefully remove the lid.
Blend the apples until smooth and pour into the canning jars. This should keep for about 3 weeks in the refrigerator.

I have heard it’s important to let the steam escape using the Natural method, not instant, or you’ll have apple butter all over your kitchen. I’m going to try your recipe – it sounds wonderful. Last time I made it I added a star anise and really liked the result. Thanks!
Lily says
Thank you for your note Cheryl, I didn’t have this happen to me with my pressure cooker, but I will mention it in the recipe, just in case.
Paula says
My first attempt using my instant pot. SMELLS AMAZING!! It reminds me of the apple butter my Gram taught me how to make. It’s a smidge runny while hot but thickened while cooling. I put it into freezer-friendly containers. Thank you for helping me remember fun times with my Gram and taking time out of the equation.
Debbie says
Beware, this recipe has too much water in it. I ended up having to thicken it with cornstarch. 1/4 cup of water is sufficient.
Cheryl says
I agree with Debbie about the water. The apples give off a lot of water on their own.
Lily says
Thank you for your input! I will adjust the recipe. Cheers!
Wanda says
The recipe only calls for 1/4 cup water. Look again.
Cheryl says
beeeeeecause she edited it after the suggestion, as she mentioned in the comment directly above yours. Look again.
Cynthia says
You do not need t peel the apples?
Lily says
Hi Cynthia, it’s not necessary as it will be all smoothed out by immersion blender. Plus I like to leave the skin on because it has most of the nutrients.
Katie says
I was hesitant to make this as I am new at pressure cooking and the cooking time seems so long but I am glad I did. It’s amazing and turned out perfect. Great recipe. Thanks

I made this tonight, even though I made some mistakes, it turned out great!! I misread the amount of water, and added 1/2 cup instead of 1/4 cup. When it was done, I just simmered the butter, using the sauté setting, until it was the desired consistency.
Lily says
Sounds awesome! Thanks Kristina!
Matt says
Will this recipe as posted fit in the 6 qt?
Lily says
Hi Matt! Yes!
Meghan says
Wonderful recipe! This is my first time using my Insta Pot and making Apple Butter. Thank you!
Lily says
Awesome! Thanks so much Meghan!
Julie says
This is so delicious and so easy! But like other commenters, 1/4 cup water is too much! I actually don’t think any water is necessary because of the water that comes out of the apples. After I blended, I added some cornstarch (not sure how much as I just added a little at a time until I felt I had enough), and then turned it on saute for it to simmer and bubble for a few minutes.
Lisa Frederick says
Even with the water in the apples, because it is a PRESSURE cooker, you initially NEED water (or other liquid) to cause the steam to build the pressure; if you don’t, it usually won’t cook very well and won’t be successful. Just food for thought.
Lily says
Thank you so much Lisa!
Lily says
Thank you Julie! I’m so glad you loved this recipe! The final liquid content will depend on the apple kind, but some water is essential to build up the steam inside the pressure cooker.
Erika says
How thick is the apple butter supposed to be? Mine is just a little thicker then applesauce.
Sherry says
I like mine quite thick like a spread, you just need to cook it down some more if you like yours thicker. Don’t let it get too thick though or if you can it you will have apple glue! Apples, especially tart apples have a lot of pectin and will gel naturally after they cool.
Cheryl says
Can you freeze the apple butter?
Pam Halloran says
Fantastic taste and soooo easy to make!! I am cooking-challenged but the Instant Pot is making me look good. My family was amazed that I made apple butter and I am feeling accomplished at my success. I’m making my third badge of yumminess today!
Jillian says
What do you think is the best apples to use? Also, do you have to can it (I don’t know how yet) or can you just put it in jars and freeze it? Thanks for your help!!
Annette says
How many canning jars will this fill ?
Lynn says
Instead of the ¼ cup of water, would apple cider work?
Lily says
Hm, not sure, but would love to hear back you feedback on this if you tried it this way.
Stephanie says
For some reason my instant pot said burn before it came to pressure. I gave it a stir and tried again and it beeped again and said burn. So I added a bit of water and stirred. Anyone else have this happen?
Lynn says
Yes, fresh apple cider will work. I also replace the water with apple cider when I make instant pot applesauce.
Kathie says
Do you have a suggestion for an alternate Apple other than the McIintosh to use for the butter? Hard to find in my area, used them all the time when I lived in Wisconsin.

I’m not a fan of apple butter. Do you have a recipe for pumpkin butter?

She use to make Булочки with cottage cheese. Sooo yumm. I cant wait to make it and make some Булочки and bring them over to her as soon as they get out of the oven.
